The paper we will discuss is entitled “Social-psychological interventions in education:  They’re not magic”.  It’s a review article that discusses stereotype threat.  Previously, we’ve read the classic paper introducing stereotype threat by Steele & Aronson (Oct 21, 2009).  We’ve read papers showing that a tiny intervention at the start of the semester can have a magical long-term effect improving student performance (Jan 27, 2011; Oct 14, 2009; Oct 2, 2008).  Each time we read papers about these interventions, our discussion has centered around our disbelief that such small interventions could possibly be as effective as the articles describe.  This review article is aimed at answering our concerns.

It’s a long article, so let’s split it into two weeks.  For the first week, read pages 267-282.
